Well Done

Matthew 25:23 – “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!'”

The banquet hall was full for his retirement, forty five years marked in a single evening. One speaker after another stood to talk about what he had built, the building programs, the baptisms, the counseling sessions that ran late into countless nights, the funerals where he sat with grieving families long after everyone else had gone home. A plaque was presented. A choir he had led decades earlier came back together for one final song. People who had not seen each other in years hugged in the parking lof afterward, trading stories about a man who had simply shown up, week after week, for most of their lives.

It was a good night, the kind a faithful man deserves. But something about it felt incomplete, the way any human tribute eventually does. The applause would fade by morning. The plaque would end up on a shelf, admired for a season and then dusted less and less. Even the warmest words from a podium cannot fully weigh what forty five years of faithfulness actually cost a person, the sacrifices nobody saw, the doubts nobody heard, the seasons he kept showing up anyway when showing up was the hardest thing he could have done.

Jesus told a parable about servants entrusted with their master’s resources, and the ones who were faithful heard exactly two sentences from him when the accounting was finished. Well done, good and faithful servant. No banquet hall. No plaque. Just the verdict of the only Judge whose approval was ever the actual goal.

That pastor will remember the applause for a while. What he is truly waiting to hear, no retirement dinner can give him.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, whatever I build, let it be for the reward of hearing You say well done. Amen.

Reflection Question: If your life were measured only by faithfulness, how would you feel about the measurement?
