The Recipe

Matthew 12:33 – “A tree is recognized by its fruit.”

The recipe card called for a cup of flour, a pinch of salt, two eggs, a stick of butter softened at room temperature. Nothing about it was complicated, and nothing about it was optional either. Substitute vinegar for the vanilla and the batch would still bake, still come out of the oven looking mostly like it should, but the taste would be wrong in a way no amount of frosting could cover up. A recipe does not care about intentions. It only produces what was actually poured into the bowl.

Most people would never dream of swapping ingredients like that in the kitchen and expecting the same result. Yet plenty of people run their lives that way without thinking twice about it. A steady diet of complaint gets poured in daily and the person wonders why bitterness keeps rising to the surface. Hours of content nobody would want their children watching gets poured in nightly and the person wonders why their mind keeps drifting toward things they claim not to want. Nobody sits down and plans to become resentful or distracted or numb. It happens one ordinary ingredient at a time, measured out so gradually that the final result feels like a surprise.

Jesus said a tree is known by its fruit, and fruit does not lie about the root that produced it. What gets poured in consistently is what eventually gets produced, whether that is patience or irritability, faith or fear, generosity or self protection. The ingredients rarely announce themselves as dangerous while they are being added. They just quietly become the batch.

Check the recipe before tasting the result. By then, the ingredients are already baked in.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me pay attention to what I am pouring into my life daily. Give me discernment to recognize ingredients that will produce fruit I don’t want. Amen.

Reflection Question: What is one ingredient you’ve been pouring into your life consistently that may be producing fruit you don’t actually want?
