The Gym

1 Timothy 4:7 – “Train yourself to be godly.”

The gym parking lot filled up fast every January, rows of cars belonging to people determined to make this the year something finally changed. Membership cards got swiped at the door, lockers got assigned, brand new gym bags got hung on brand new hooks. But a membership card has never once built muscle or dropped a pound. Neither has walking in the door, scrolling on a phone between machines, or standing near the weights hoping proximity might count for something. The body only changes because of what happens on the actual equipment, rep after rep, week after week, resistance applied consistently until something in the body has no choice but to adapt.

By February, plenty of those same cars stop showing up. The membership is still active. The gym still opens at five every morning. What disappeared was the effort, and without the effort, nothing that membership paid for was ever going to happen automatically.

Paul told Timothy to train himself to be godly, using language that would have made every reader in that culture think immediately of athletic discipline, the kind of daily, deliberate exertion that produces a specific result over time. He did not tell Timothy to simply believe correctly and wait for godliness to appear. Train carries the weight of sweat and repetition, of showing up on the days motivation is nowhere to be found, because spiritual growth follows the same law that governs a gym floor. Presence without effort produces nothing.

Nobody expects to walk past a treadmill and wake up stronger the next morning. Nobody should expect to walk past their Bible and wake up more like Christ either.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the discipline to put real effort into my walk with You. Train my heart to be godly. Amen.

Reflection Question: Where in your spiritual life have you been present without putting in real effort?
