Alcohol Wipe

Hebrews 12:11 – “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness.”

he razor had already done its work by then, gliding along the edges of the beard line, cleaning up the neck and jaw with the kind of precision only years behind the chair can produce. Then came the part every regular customer braces for. The barber reached for the small bottle, poured a bit onto a cotton pad, and pressed it against skin that had just been scraped clean by steel. The sting hit immediately, sharp enough to make a grown man flinch in the chair, eyes watering slightly, jaw tightening for a few seconds before it passed. No barber ever apologizes for it. Every barber knows exactly why it’s necessary.

That alcohol is not there to make the moment enjoyable. It’s there to close what the razor opened, to kill anything that could turn a clean cut into an infection, to protect skin that would otherwise be left vulnerable the moment that chair was empty again. The sting is not a flaw in the process. It is the process doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The writer of Hebrews said discipline never feels pleasant while it is happening, only painful, though it produces a harvest of righteousness for those who have been trained by it. God applies that same kind of sting sometimes, not out of cruelty but because sin leaves a person exposed in ways they cannot always see, and love does not walk away and leave the wound unprotected. The discomfort passes. What it guards against does not stay.

The discomfort passes in seconds. The protection it leaves behind lasts far longer than the sting ever did.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when Your discipline stings, help me trust that You are protecting me, not punishing me. Thank You for loving me enough to apply what I need, not just what feels comfortable. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there an area of your life where God’s discipline has stung recently?
