Harmful But Sweet
Hebrews 11:25 – “Sin’s pleasures last only for a little while.”
The soda machine outside the break room got more use than the water fountain most afternoons, cans clanking down one after another, the fizz and the sugar hitting exactly the way people wanted it to after a long stretch of work. Nobody grabbing that can felt anything harmful happening. It tasted good, it woke a person up a little, and the aftertaste of guilt, if there was any, faded by the time the can hit the recycling bin. One soda never hurt anyone. That was the honest truth of it, every single time.
The damage was never in the one can. It was in the thousands of cans that followed it, spread out over years, each one adding a little more sugar to a bloodstream that was never designed to process that much of it so often. Nobody wakes up one morning with a damaged pancreas from a single afternoon soda. The harm builds slowly, invisibly, disguised the entire time by how enjoyable each individual can felt going down.
The writer of Hebrews described sin the same way, admitting plainly that its pleasures are real, not imagined, but that they only last for a little while. That honesty matters. Scripture never pretends sin feels bad in the moment or that people are foolish for enjoying it briefly. The warning is about what accumulates underneath the pleasure while nobody is counting, the compromises stacking quietly for years until the toll finally comes due all at once, usually long after the moment that caused it has been forgotten entirely.
By then, the can that started it all is long gone, forgotten before the damage it helped cause ever showed up to collect. Nobody keeps count of the ones that seemed harmless at the time. The body does, and it always settles the account eventually.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me see past the immediate pleasure of sin to the toll it takes over time. Give me the discipline to say no to what feels good now but costs me later. Amen.
Reflection Question: What is something in your life that feels harmless in small doses but may be quietly accumulating damage over time?
