Traffic Pattern Change

Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”

The route to work had not changed in months, the same turns, the same lights, the same lane the whole way without much thought required. Then one morning a line of orange barrels appeared out of nowhere, funneling two lanes into one, rerouting traffic around a sidewalk crew mid-repair. The usual lane was gone, replaced by a temporary path marked out in barrels and cones, narrower than what everyone was used to, forcing every driver to slow down and actually pay attention to where the new lines were leading. A few cars tried to cut back toward the old lane anyway, nosing toward barrels that were clearly not going to move, before easing back into the pattern everyone else was already following.

The detour was not optional, and it was not permanent either. It existed for exactly as long as the crew needed to finish the work underneath it, and every driver who cooperated with the new pattern made it through without incident. The ones who fought it, who kept drifting toward where the road used to be, only made the crossing harder on themselves.

God moves people out of familiar routines in a similar way sometimes, rerouting a season, a relationship, a plan that had felt settled for years. Isaiah wrote that a voice would be heard behind His people, saying this is the way, walk in it, whether they turned right or left from what they expected. That guidance rarely explains itself fully in the moment. It simply marks the new lane and asks for cooperation, trusting that the One redirecting the traffic can see the work being done up ahead that the driver cannot.

The barrels never stay up forever. But while they’re there, the wise driver follows the new line instead of fighting for the old one.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when You reroute my life away from what feels familiar, help me trust Your lane markers instead of fighting to get back to where I used to be. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is God currently rerouting an area of your life that feels disorienting?
