The Storm
Mark 4:39 – “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”
Nobody caught in a storm is thinking about anything except getting through it. Every ounce of attention narrows down to one single objective, survival, and everything else falls away without a second thought. The bills waiting on the counter, the argument from earlier that week, the long list of plans for the weekend, none of it matters while the wind is howling and the water is rising. A person in a real storm does not worry about looking composed or having the right words. They grab hold of whatever is solid and they hold on, because in that moment nothing else exists except making it to the other side.
That kind of clarity is strange to think about afterward. Storms strip away everything that felt urgent five minutes earlier and replace it with one question that suddenly matters more than all of it combined. And once the storm passes, most of what seemed so pressing before rarely feels as important as it once did. Surviving has a way of resetting what actually counts.
The disciples understood that fear firsthand, caught in a boat on the Sea of Galilee as waves broke over the sides and the wind refused to let up. They woke Jesus certain they were about to drown, and He stood up, spoke two words to the wind and the waves, and the sea went completely still. Then He turned to them and asked why they were still afraid, why they still had so little faith, even with Him sitting right there in the boat.
Every storm a person walks through eventually passes. The real question is whether fear or faith is doing the steering while it does.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, when the storms of life rise up around me, remind me that You are in the boat with me and my survival is never left to chance. Amen.
Reflection Question: What storm are you currently in the middle of, and how would it change your response to remember that Christ is already in the boat with you?
