John 15:13 – “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Never Forget

Every year on this date, the same images return. Firefighters climbing stairwells that thousands of others were racing down. First responders walking directly into buildings everyone else understood to be collapsing, fully aware of what that decision might cost them. Many of those rescuers never made it back down. They gave the rest of their own lives so that strangers they had never met might get to keep theirs.

What makes that kind of sacrifice remarkable is how deliberate it was. Nobody stumbled into it by accident. Each one made a choice, in a moment when turning around would have been completely understandable, to go toward the danger instead of away from it. That is what separates a rescuer from a bystander, and it is also what separates ordinary love from the kind Jesus described to His disciples. He told them no love is greater than laying down one’s life for a friend, and He said it the night before He did precisely that.

The difference between His sacrifice and theirs is worth sitting with. Those first responders gave their lives for people who were already known to them in some sense, fellow citizens, fellow human beings caught in the same disaster. Christ laid His life down for people who were still His enemies, who had not yet turned toward Him and in many cases never would. Romans 5:8 says God demonstrated His own love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He did not wait for us to become worth saving. He went in anyway.

A moment of silence honors what was lost that day. But the greater sacrifice, the one made for every person reading this, asks for something more than silence. It asks whether that love has actually changed how we live.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for those who ran toward danger so others could live, and thank You most of all for laying down Your own life for me before I ever knew You. Amen.

Reflection Question: Who in your life needs the kind of sacrificial love that runs toward them instead of away?
