The Spice Rack
Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
A good cook does not reach for the spice rack randomly. Each small jar holds something capable of transforming a dish entirely, but only when the right one is chosen in the right amount at the right moment. Too little and the flavor never fully develops. Too much and the same ingredient that could have elevated the meal ends up overwhelming it completely. A skilled cook can look at a half finished dish and know precisely what it still needs, even when someone standing beside them could not identify the missing piece at all.
God works with the details of a life the same way. Paul wrote that God works all things together for good for those who love Him, and that promise assumes something specific, that God knows exactly what a life needs and precisely how much of it to allow. A hard season is not thrown in carelessly. A delay is not an accident of timing. Each one gets measured by someone who already knows what the finished result is meant to become, even while the person living through it can only taste the individual ingredient and not yet the meal it is building toward.
That is often where trust breaks down. A pinch of something bitter, on its own, rarely tastes like anything worth thanking God for. Grief tastes like grief. Waiting tastes like waiting. But a cook does not judge an ingredient by tasting it alone off a spoon. He judges it by what it becomes once it has had time to work through the whole dish. Paul was not promising that everything added to a life would feel good going in. He was promising that nothing gets added without purpose, and that the hand doing the measuring already knows what it is making.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, teach me to trust Your hand instead of questioning every ingredient. Amen.
Reflection Question: What is something currently in your life that tastes bitter on its own right now?
