1 Peter 5:8 – “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
The smell hit before anything else did, that unmistakable sharpness of smoke drifting somewhere inside the house. Every instinct kicked in immediately, checking outlets, sniffing near the kitchen, moving room to room trying to locate the source before it became something worse. It turned out to be nothing inside the house at all. A neighbor two yards over had started a small fire in a burn barrel, and the wind had simply carried the scent in through an open window. Nothing was actually wrong. But for those few minutes before the source was identified, the alarm felt completely justified.
That reaction was not overreacting. It was exactly how a person is supposed to respond to the smell of smoke, immediately and without hesitation, because the cost of ignoring it and being wrong once is far higher than the cost of investigating it and being wrong a hundred times. Nobody smells smoke in their house and decides to wait and see what happens. The smell itself is the warning, built into how the body processes danger, designed to interrupt whatever else is happening until the source gets identified.
Peter warned believers to stay alert and sober minded because an enemy was actively prowling, looking for exactly the moment when nobody was paying attention. That kind of warning only works if the warning signs are taken seriously the instant they appear, before there is any proof that something is actually wrong. A short temper flaring more easily than it used to. A drift away from prayer that feels harmless at first. A compromise that seemed small enough to overlook. Each one carries its own version of that smell, faint at first, easy to dismiss as nothing, and the person who waits for confirmation before checking it is the same person who ends up standing in a house that has been quietly burning far longer than they realized.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the same instinct for spiritual danger that I have for physical danger. Help me take the warning signs seriously the moment I notice them. Amen.
Reflection Question: What warning sign in your spiritual life have you been smelling but have yet to investigate?
