The Referee
Ecclesiastes 12:14 – “For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”
The referee at the game saw the entire field, not just the play unfolding in front of the ball. While every player and every fan in the stands had their eyes locked on one collision near the sideline, the referee had already clocked a shove thirty yards away, out of the crowd’s line of sight entirely, the kind of small infraction that would have gone completely unnoticed by everyone else in the stadium. The whistle blew, the flag went down, and half the crowd immediately started arguing about a call they had not actually seen happen.
Solomon wrote that God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil, and that verse carries the same unsettling weight a hidden penalty carries for a player who genuinely believed no one saw. Most people live carefully in front of a crowd and carelessly the moment they believe no one is watching, and the two versions of themselves can end up looking nothing alike. The version on display gets managed, polished, kept within the lines everyone can see. The version that shows up alone, in the moments nobody is positioned to witness, often tells a truer story about what is actually being built in a person’s character.
God is not distracted by whatever the crowd happens to be looking at in a given moment. He is not limited to the visible collision everyone else is arguing about. He sees the shove at the far end of the field, the thought nobody spoke aloud, the choice made in a room with no audience at all, and none of it waits for someone else to notice before it counts. That should not produce dread so much as clarity. A life lived the same way in private as it is in public has nothing left for a hidden referee to expose.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me live with integrity even in the moments no one else is watching, knowing that You see everything. Amen.
Reflection Question: What do you do differently when you believe no one is watching?
