12 Items Or Less

Philippians 2:3-4 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

The sign above the register read “12 Items or Less” in bright red letters, impossible to miss. The man at the front of the line had a cart piled high with two cases of water, a family pack of chicken, a dozen cans of soup, cereal, and paper towels. Behind him, a nurse in scrubs held a single sandwich and a bottle of juice, glancing at the time on her phone. An older woman balanced a loaf of bread and a carton of milk in her arms. The cashier hesitated, then began scanning, and the line settled in for a long wait.

Scenes like that reveal a common attitude. Some people treat rules as suggestions meant for everyone else. The sign applies to the crowd, but their own hurry, their own schedule, and their own convenience always seem to qualify as the exception. The people standing behind them rarely enter the calculation at all.

Paul addressed that attitude directly in his letter to the Philippians. He told believers to do nothing out of selfish ambition and to value others above themselves. He then pointed to Jesus, who held every right of heaven and still set those rights aside to serve. The Son of God never claimed an exception for Himself. He took the lowest place willingly and considered the needs of others before His own comfort.

Followers of Christ are called to carry that same mind into ordinary places, including a grocery store line. Every shortcut taken at someone else’s expense reveals where a heart has placed itself. The believer who looks to the interests of others reflects the humility of the Savior in the small moments where most people never think to look.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the humility of Christ so that I consider the needs of others before my own convenience. Amen.

Reflection Question: Where have you been treating yourself as the exception to a rule that inconveniences others?
