I Can’t Hear You

Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

The young man waved from across the coffee shop, then called his friend’s name a little louder. Nothing happened. His friend sat at a corner table with a laptop open and a pair of black over-ear headphones snug against his head, nodding slightly to whatever played inside them. The espresso machine hissed, chairs scraped across the tile, and a blender roared behind the counter, yet none of it reached him. Finally the young man walked over and tapped him on the shoulder, and his friend jumped in surprise before sliding the headphones down around his neck.

The world produces a constant roar of its own. News alerts, social media feeds, opinions, worries, and the steady pressure to want more all compete for space in the believer’s mind. That noise rarely announces itself as dangerous. It simply fills every quiet moment until the voice of God becomes hard to pick out from everything else.

Isaiah described a different kind of focus. He wrote that God keeps in perfect peace the person whose mind stays fixed on Him. Jesus said His sheep listen to His voice. A sheep surrounded by commotion still knows which voice belongs to the shepherd, because it has spent enough time near him to recognize it.

Believers need something capable of shutting out the noise, and God has already provided it. Time in His Word, steady prayer, and a mind deliberately set on Him create a space where distractions lose their grip. The roar of the world may continue all around, yet the heart fixed on God will hear clearly the One who matters most.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me shut out the noise of the world so I can hear Your voice clearly. Amen.

Reflection Question: What noise in your daily life is making it hardest to hear from God?
