Lemonade

Matthew 5:13 – “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?

The water bottle sat on the desk, clear and plain, half-forgotten beside a stack of paperwork. The young woman tore open a small yellow packet of lemonade mix and tipped it into the narrow opening. Fine powder slid down the side of the bottle, and the moment it hit the water, pale yellow clouds began to swirl outward. She screwed the cap back on and gave it a few hard shakes. Within seconds, the entire bottle had turned bright yellow. One sip told the rest of the story. The water no longer tasted like water.

Jesus told His followers that they are the salt of the earth. Salt in the ancient world flavored food and kept it from spoiling, and a small amount changed everything it touched. Jesus expected His people to have that same kind of effect. A believer placed into an office, a classroom, a family gathering, or a tense conversation should leave a noticeable difference behind.

Joseph showed what that looks like. Sold as a slave and carried into Egypt, he landed in the house of Potiphar, an Egyptian official. Scripture records that the Lord blessed Potiphar’s entire household because of Joseph. His circumstances were far from ideal, yet everything around him changed once he arrived.

Too many believers enter a room and leave it exactly as they found it. The gossip continues, the complaining carries on, and no one notices anything different. God places His people in specific situations on purpose. When grace, honesty, patience, and the love of Christ are poured into a setting, the flavor of that setting should change, and everyone present should be able to taste it.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, let my presence change the flavor of every situation You place me in. Amen.

Reflection Question: What situation in your life has stayed exactly the same since you entered it?
