Two Signs, One Fence
Philippians 3:20 – “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
For six weeks, the two yard signs faced each other across a short stretch of lawn. One neighbor had planted his near the mailbox in September, and the other answered with a sign of the opposite color the very next day. Waves turned into nods, and nods eventually turned into nothing. Then a storm rolled through on a Thursday night and knocked down a section of the wooden fence between their yards. By seven the next morning, both men were outside in work gloves, one holding a post steady while the other drove in the screws. Neither mentioned the signs. Both of them would sit in the same church sanctuary that Sunday.
Paul reminded the Philippians that their citizenship is in heaven, and that they eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. Earthly citizenship carries real responsibilities, and believers should vote thoughtfully and care about the communities they live in. Yet neither the elephant nor the donkey has ever saved a single soul. Hope placed in a party, a candidate, or an election will eventually disappoint, because no earthly government can accomplish what only Christ can do.
Paul also told the Galatians that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one in Him. The divisions the world treats as permanent lose their power inside the family of God.
Election seasons have a way of revealing where a believer’s deepest loyalty lies. Two Christians may cast very different ballots, yet they share one Lord, one faith, and one eternal home. Brothers and sisters who belong to the same kingdom can still stand side by side, fixing what the storm knocked down.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, keep my hope fixed on You and my heart open to every brother and sister in Christ. Amen.
Reflection Question: Has a political allegiance made it harder for you to love a brother or sister in Christ?
