The Quiet Mechanic
Proverbs 29:25 – “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.”
The customer had brought her car in for an oil change and mentioned twice that money was tight that month. While the car sat on the lift, the mechanic noticed the brake pads were worn nearly to the metal. He thought about the worried look on her face, wiped his hands on a rag, and said nothing. She paid for the oil change, thanked him warmly, and drove away. Three weeks later, traffic stopped suddenly on the highway, and her brakes could not stop the car in time. His silence had felt like kindness in the shop. On the highway, it nearly cost her everything.
Solomon warned that fear of man will prove to be a snare. Such fear rarely looks like cowardice from the inside. It feels like compassion, like keeping the peace, or like sparing someone pain they do not seem ready to hear. Believers rightly want preachers who will speak the truth without flinching. Yet many of the same believers soften or swallow the truth with the people closest to them. A friend drifts into sin, a family member heads toward a destructive decision, and nobody says a word because the conversation would be uncomfortable.
Paul told the Ephesians to speak the truth in love. Love and truth were never meant to compete. Truth without love wounds needlessly, while love that withholds the truth leaves someone exposed to danger they cannot see.
Whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe, Solomon wrote, and trust in Him frees a believer to speak up. A gentle, honest word spoken today may be the very thing that keeps someone safe on the road ahead.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, free me from the fear of man so I can speak the truth in love. Amen.
