Television Commercials

Isaiah 55:1 – “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”

The family settled onto the couch for their favorite Thursday night drama, a bowl of popcorn passed from hand to hand. Twelve minutes in, just as the story reached a cliffhanger, the screen cut to a commercial. A shiny pickup truck climbed a mountain road, a smiling couple sank into a new mattress, and a fast-food burger sizzled in slow motion. Most viewers think of commercials as interruptions, yet the network sees it the other way around. Advertisers pay for every minute of airtime, and the show exists largely to gather an audience in front of the screen when the ads begin.

Everyone is selling something. Advertisers spend fortunes convincing people they need a newer car, a softer mattress, or a better meal, and most of those products will be outdated or forgotten within a few years.

God has been advertising too. David wrote that the heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Every sunrise, every changing season, and every star in the night sky points back to the Creator. Through Isaiah, God issued the clearest invitation of all. He called everyone who is thirsty to come to the waters and invited those with no money to come, buy, and eat at no cost.

God’s offer stands apart from every other pitch. He meets a real need that every human heart carries, the need for forgiveness, peace, and life with Him. The price has already been paid in full by Jesus Christ at the cross. His invitation never expires, and anyone who responds receives a gift that will never wear out or go out of style.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for freely offering what my heart needs most through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Reflection Question: What have you been buying into that could never meet the need only God can fill?
