A Broken Heart Still Beats
Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
The pain can be so intense it feels physical—that crushing sensation in your chest when loss, betrayal, or disappointment strikes. In these moments, breathing itself becomes a conscious effort. Sleep eludes. Food loses appeal. The world continues its normal rhythms while your inner landscape lies in ruins.
Yet amid this devastation comes a simple, powerful truth: a broken heart still beats. Despite the fractures, despite the pain, the essential function continues. This biological reality points to a deeper spiritual truth—brokenness, however severe, is not the end of your story.
Scripture never minimizes heartbreak. The psalmist speaks of being “crushed in spirit.” Proverbs acknowledges that “a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). Even Jesus, facing the cross, described Himself as “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). These biblical voices validate our pain rather than dismissing it.
Yet alongside this validation comes the promise of continued life. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” not distant from them. God draws especially near in our brokenness. Like a skilled physician attending a trauma patient, His presence intensifies precisely when our hearts are most shattered.
Hannah’s story illustrates this journey. Her barrenness broke her heart year after year. She wept, couldn’t eat, endured misunderstanding from those closest to her. Yet through her tears, she continued to pray, to worship, to live. Her broken heart kept beating until, in God’s timing, her weeping turned to rejoicing. The testimony of a still-beating heart is this: life continues even through pain, and brokenness is a season, not a destination.
Today’s Prayer: Father, remind me that You draw close to the brokenhearted and that this pain is not my ending. Amen.
Reflection Question: How might your current heartbreak be a painful transition to something new God is preparing?
