A New School Year
James 1:2-3 – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
The classroom had been empty all summer, but by the second week of August it looked like a different room entirely. Bulletin boards freshly stapled with construction paper letters, desks arranged in careful rows, name tags already taped down for children who had not walked through the door yet. The teacher had spent days on it, staying late, running errands for supplies out of her own pocket, mapping out lesson plans for a school year that had not technically started but was already fully formed in her mind. She knew the students were coming. She just did not know yet exactly who they would be or what each one would need from her once they arrived.
That kind of preparation looks strange from the outside if a person does not understand what is coming. Why arrange desks for children who are still asleep in their own beds three weeks away. Why plan lessons for a calendar that has not turned yet. But any teacher knows the answer without having to explain it. The first day goes better for everyone when the preparation happened long before the first student ever walked through that door.
James told believers to consider it pure joy when they face trials of many kinds, because the testing of faith produces perseverance, and that kind of steadiness rarely develops in the middle of the trial itself. It develops beforehand, in the ordinary days nobody is watching, through scripture read before the crisis, through prayer built into a routine before the emergency arrives needing one. God knows what is coming in a life even when the person living it does not. He is not asking anyone to guess the exact date. He is asking them to have the room ready.
The teacher never knew exactly which students would walk through her door that August morning. She only knew they were coming, and that was reason enough to be ready.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me prepare my heart for what is coming, even when I don’t know the details. Build in me a steadiness that comes from time spent with You. Amen.
Reflection Question: What preparation have you been putting off because the need hasn’t arrived yet?
