Ask For Help

Ecclesiastes 4:9 – “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.”

The aisle numbers overhead made sense in theory, but after fifteen minutes of walking back and forth between plumbing and electrical, the item on the list still had not turned up anywhere. Every aisle looked similar enough to blur together after a while, rows of boxes and packaging that all seemed to promise the exact thing needed without actually being it. Frustration crept in slowly, the kind that comes from refusing to admit the search had stopped working an aisle or two ago. An employee in an orange apron walked past twice during that stretch, clearly available, clearly capable of helping. Both times, the instinct was to keep looking alone rather than stop and ask.

The third time, finally, came the question. Within ninety seconds, the employee walked straight to the exact shelf, pointed to the exact item, and the search that had eaten twenty minutes ended before the conversation was even finished. The store had not changed. The item had not moved. The only thing that changed was the willingness to admit the search needed help to succeed.

Solomon wrote that two are better than one, because they get a good return for their labor, and that principle applies to far more than getting work done efficiently. It applies to seasons of struggle a person insists on carrying alone, convinced that asking would somehow be a failure rather than wisdom. God placed people in a life on purpose, some with knowledge, some with strength, some simply with presence, and none of that help does any good to someone determined to keep wandering the aisles by themselves.

The employee had been available the entire twenty minutes, walking past twice while the search dragged on unnecessarily. Nothing about that changed until pride finally gave way to a simple question. God is no different. He does not wait for someone to exhaust every resource on their own before He is willing to help. He is simply waiting to be asked.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the humility to ask for help when I need it, rather than exhausting myself trying to handle everything alone. Thank You for the people You’ve placed around me. Amen.

Reflection Question: What are you currently struggling with alone that you could ask someone for help with, rather than continuing to wander through it by yourself?
