Backing Out Into Traffic

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

The scene unfolds with predictable anxiety—a driver attempting to back out into busy traffic. Cars speed by as the driver cranes their neck, trying to find an opening large enough to reverse into. Onlookers wince, anticipating the potential collision. The entire maneuver seems unnecessarily risky when a simple turn-around would allow for a safer forward entry into the flow.

This roadside scenario perfectly illustrates how many of us navigate life. Rather than facing forward toward our future, we back into it—moving in reverse while fixating on what’s behind us. We enter life’s traffic flow with limited visibility, relying on distorted mirrors that show only partial perspectives. Our attention divides between where we’ve been and where we’re trying to go, creating dangerous blind spots.

God offers a better approach. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you,” He promises in Psalm 32:8. This divine guidance invites us to turn around—to reorient ourselves so we can move forward with full visibility rather than backing blindly into what lies ahead.

Spiritually speaking, backing into traffic happens when we rely on past experiences, personal wisdom, or cultural patterns rather than divine direction. We navigate by looking backward instead of seeking God’s forward perspective. We miss seeing the openings He provides because our attention points in the wrong direction.

The remedy comes through surrendering our self-determined paths. When we allow God to turn us around—reorienting our perspective, priorities, and plans—we discover the safety and confidence of moving forward under His guidance.

Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me for attempting to back into life’s traffic flow while fixating on what’s behind me. Help me move in the direction You’re leading. Amen.

Reflection Question: In what area of your life are you “backing into traffic” rather than turning around to move forward with God’s guidance?
