Beneath The Surface
Jeremiah 17:9-10 – “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ‘I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind.'”
The task seemed straightforward—shoveling snow from the driveway. With each scoop and toss, progress was visible, the white blanket gradually receding. Then suddenly—a slip, a lurch, and a painful landing. Beneath the powdery snow lay a treacherous sheet of ice, invisible until that moment of unexpected contact. What appeared to be a simple job concealed a hidden danger.
This common winter experience serves as a powerful metaphor for our spiritual lives. Often what’s visible—our behaviors, words, and public persona—can mask more dangerous realities beneath. Like ice under snow, these hidden elements may remain undetected until a moment of crisis reveals their presence.
Scripture repeatedly warns of this deceptive dynamic. Jesus confronted the Pharisees, comparing them to “whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead” (Matthew 23:27). He cautioned that “from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts” (Mark 7:21). The prophet Jeremiah declared, “The heart is deceitful above all things… Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
These hidden layers might include unacknowledged pride camouflaged as religious devotion, anger disguised as righteous indignation, fear masquerading as prudence, or jealousy cloaked as principled concern. Like ice beneath snow, they create spiritual instability while remaining largely invisible to our conscious awareness.
Yet what we cannot see, God discerns perfectly. The verse continues, “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind” (Jeremiah 17:10). His penetrating gaze sees beyond our carefully maintained surface to the underlying realities of our inner landscape.
This divine insight isn’t meant to condemn but to heal. The God who sees beneath our surface invites us to the transformative work of self-examination guided by His Spirit.
Today’s Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for seeing what lies beneath my surface. Reveal to me the hidden attitudes, motives, and patterns that could cause me to stumble. Amen.
Reflection Question: What dangerous “ice beneath the snow” is God be bringing to your attention right now?
