Can You Handle Accolades?

Romans 12:3 – “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

The applause lingered as people approached with smiles and handshakes. “Brilliant presentation.” “Exactly what we needed.” “You have such expertise in this area.” The words felt like warm sunshine after months of preparation for the webinar training. There’s something uniquely satisfying about recognition for work well done—something that resonates in our souls.

Yet praise, like many good things, carries hidden dangers. Left unchecked, accolades can subtly transform satisfaction into pride, confidence into arrogance, and service into self-promotion. The same recognition that initially motivates can eventually intoxicate.

Scripture consistently warns against this progression. When King Uzziah “became powerful, his pride led to his downfall” (2 Chronicles 26:16). King Nebuchadnezzar, while admiring his accomplishments, heard heaven declare, “Your royal authority has been taken from you” (Daniel 4:31). Even the disciples weren’t immune—they argued about who among them was greatest while Jesus prepared to demonstrate true greatness through sacrificial service.

Paul understood this human tendency when he instructed believers to think of themselves “with sober judgment.” Like a person remaining clearheaded while others become intoxicated, sober judgment keeps perspective when praise threatens to distort it. This doesn’t mean rejecting affirmation—acknowledgment of good work reflects God’s pattern of affirming faithfulness. Rather, it means receiving recognition with humility that redirects glory to its proper destination.

The question isn’t whether accolades will come—for those who excel, they eventually will. The deeper question is whether we’ll handle them with humble gratitude or allow them to handle us. Can we accept the applause without becoming addicted to it?

Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, guard my heart from letting praise become my purpose or identity. Remind me that any ability I possess comes from You. Amen.
