Chained To The Past
Isaiah 43:18-19 – “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.“
In a touching interview, an actress shared how after years of estrangement from a former co-star, their reconciliation conversation finally freed her to move forward. “I felt like I could finally move on with my life,” she admitted. Yet the irony of her situation was clear to observers: she could have chosen to move forward years earlier, without waiting for that conversation. She had been unknowingly chained to her past, holding the key to her own freedom all along.
How many of us live similarly chained to past hurts, disappointments, or grievances? We convince ourselves that moving forward requires certain conditions: an apology received, justice served, or recognition given. Meanwhile, life passes by as we remain tethered to moments long gone.
Isaiah’s prophetic words offer divine perspective on this human tendency. God explicitly instructs His people not to dwell on former things but instead to recognize the new work He is doing. The instruction isn’t conditional—it doesn’t say “forget the former things once they’ve been properly resolved.” It simply directs us to release our grip on what lies behind.
Paul echoed this principle in Philippians 3:13-14 when he wrote about “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” His forward momentum wasn’t dependent on perfect resolution of his complicated past but on his deliberate choice to redirect his focus.
The chains binding us to our past are often fashioned by our own hands. While reconciliation is beautiful when possible, our freedom needn’t depend on circumstances beyond our control. God offers release through forgiveness, acceptance, and the embrace of His ongoing work in our lives—creating streams in wasteland places we thought permanently barren.
What might spring up in your life if you chose to unshackle yourself from what cannot be changed?
Today’s Prayer: Gracious Father, help us recognize the keys of forgiveness and acceptance You’ve already placed in our hands and give us courage to release what binds us to yesterday. Amen.
Reflection Question: What specific past hurt, or disappointment are you still allowing to influence your present joy and freedom?
