Change Of Plans

Proverbs 16:9 – “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

The flight is booked, the hotel reserved, the schedule set. Then the phone rings—an equipment failure at a different location requires immediate attention. Suddenly, Florida becomes Pennsylvania, and carefully laid plans dissolve into a flurry of rerouting and rearranging. Such moments reveal not just our ability to adapt but our deeper attitudes toward control and flexibility.

Life rarely follows our carefully scripted plans. Abraham left Ur with a destination in mind, only to spend decades as a sojourner, his plans repeatedly revised by divine direction. Paul set his missionary sights on Asia, only to be redirected by the Spirit to Macedonia. These examples reveal a consistent pattern: those who walk with God hold their plans loosely.

James addresses this directly: “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow… Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that'” (James 4:13-15).

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plan—Scripture commends prudent preparation. Rather, it means we plan with awareness of God’s overriding sovereignty. We draft our agendas in pencil, ready for divine edits.

Walking with the Lord transforms how we experience disruptions. What might otherwise feel like frustrating interruptions become potential divine appointments. The equipment failure that sends us to Pennsylvania instead of Florida might be precisely where God intends to work. Our detours may actually be the main road in God’s mapping.

Today’s Prayer: Father, help me hold my plans with open hands and see Your purpose in my detours. Amen.

Reflection Question: When your plans were recently disrupted, did you view it as an interruption or as God’s redirection?
