“A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.”
Henry Ward Beecher
The transformative power of Jesus Christ in an individual’s life is beautifully captured in the words of the classic hymn, “Since Jesus Came into My Heart.” The songwriter joyfully declares, “Oh what a change in my life has been wrought, since Jesus came into my heart. I have light in my soul for which long I sought, since Jesus came into my heart.” These lyrics reflect a profound and life-altering experience that occurs when one invites Jesus into their heart. The illumination of the soul that the songwriter describes signifies a deep, inner transformation that brings joy, hope, and a sense of purpose.
One of the most poignant biblical examples of such a transformation is found in the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17.

Luke 17:15
15Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice.
Among these ten, there was a man whose experience underscores the magnitude of change that Jesus brings. This man was not only suffering from leprosy, a disease that isolated him from society, but he was also a Samaritan. Samaritans were despised by the Jews, which meant that even before his affliction, he was marginalized and ostracized. His plight was thus doubly severe—shunned both for his ethnicity and his illness.
This verse highlights a critical moment of recognition and gratitude. The healed Samaritan experienced an overwhelming realization that his life had irrevocably changed. No longer was he the outcast defined by his disease or his heritage. Instead, he became a living testimony to the transformative power of Jesus.
This profound change is something many of us can relate to in our spiritual journeys. At some point, each of us comes to a moment of realization—a moment when we understand that we are no longer the people we once were. Perhaps we have struggled with feelings of unworthiness, sin, or despair. Yet, through Christ, we find renewal and redemption.
Recognizing how far the Lord has brought us often inspires a deep sense of gratitude. We realize that we are no longer on the same path we once walked. Christ’s intervention in our lives changes our direction, our purpose, and our identity. This transformation prompts us to give thanks, much like the healed leper who returned to glorify God. When we reflect on our past and see the stark difference Jesus has made, it stirs in us a heartfelt desire to express our gratitude and share our testimony.
The recognition of a great change brought by Jesus is both a deeply personal experience. It transforms our hearts and lives, and then radiates outward, potentially influencing those around us. Like the Samaritan leper, we are encouraged us to share our testimony and the love of God to a world in need.
