Cracks In The Foundation

Matthew 7:24 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

At a gas station in South Bay, a curious sight catches the eye. While filling tires with air, a significant crack becomes visible in the pavement. Water steadily seeps through this fissure, gradually undermining what appears solid at first glance. Left unaddressed, this seemingly minor imperfection will expand, eventually requiring costly repairs or complete replacement.

Such cracks remind us of the spiritual foundations on which lives are built. What begins as a hairline fracture—a small compromise, an unchallenged doubt, a subtle shift in priorities—can slowly widen, allowing harmful influences to seep into the soul.

Jesus concluded His most famous sermon with a stark contrast between two builders—one who built on rock and another on sand. When storms came, only the house with a proper foundation remained standing. His point wasn’t about construction techniques but about spiritual integrity.

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand,” Jesus continued in Matthew 7:26. The difference wasn’t in hearing but in doing—translating truth into action, principles into practice.

Spiritual foundations require regular inspection. Like property owners who examine concrete after winter freezes, believers must regularly assess their spiritual base for developing cracks. Small fissures caught early can be repaired. Ignored, they threaten the entire structure.

The foundation inspection happens through honest self-examination, accountability relationships, and regular immersion in Scripture. These practices reveal the small cracks before they become structural failures.

A life built on the solid rock of Christ and His teachings doesn’t guarantee absence of storms, but it ensures stability when those storms inevitably come.

Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us wisdom to inspect our spiritual foundations regularly. Help us build our lives on the unchanging truth of Your Word. Amen.

Reflection Question: What “cracks” have you noticed forming in your spiritual foundation recently?
