Did You Really Let Go
Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
“Let go and let God”—the phrase rolls off the tongue with deceptive ease. We nod in agreement, perhaps even counsel others with these words. Yet this simple expression describes one of faith’s most challenging practices. Many of us claim we’ve surrendered a situation to God when, in reality, we’ve maintained a firm grip while merely adjusting our hold.
True release leaves evidence in its wake. Like a tree branch that finally drops its withered autumn leaf, the release changes more than just our language. How can we discern whether we’ve truly let go?
Our thought patterns provide the clearest indicator. When we’ve truly released something to God, our minds no longer constantly revisit scenarios, rehearse arguments, or recalculate outcomes. The mental real estate once occupied by that concern gradually becomes available for other thoughts.
Our emotions provide another gauge. When we’ve genuinely let go, our emotional volatility around the issue diminishes. The peace that “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) begins to guard our hearts and minds. Our speech patterns shift too—less urgency, less defensiveness, more acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty.
Perhaps most tellingly, true surrender appears in our actions. We stop manipulating circumstances, pressuring people, or forcing solutions. We continue responsible involvement but release our desperate grip on controlling results. The transition from white-knuckled control to open-handed trust rarely happens instantly. But recognizing the difference between claiming surrender and actually releasing our grip is the first step toward genuine trust.
Today’s Prayer: Father, show me where I’m still clutching what I claim to have surrendered and teach me genuine trust. Amen.
Reflection Question: What situation have you verbally “surrendered” to God while your thoughts, emotions, and actions reveal you’re still attempting to maintain control?
