Don’t Believe The Hype
Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
The lights dim, dramatic music swells, and across the screen unfolds an epic battle between equally matched forces of good and evil—a cosmic dualism where light and darkness exist in perfect, opposing balance. Hollywood has masterfully packaged this narrative for decades, presenting it so compellingly that many viewers unconsciously adopt it as their spiritual framework. It makes for engaging entertainment, but it’s a lie.
Scripture never portrays Satan as God’s opposite or equal. There is no cosmic yin and yang, no divine counterbalance of darkness against light. God has no opposite because He has no equal.
Satan is not an anti-god but a created being—powerful certainly, but infinitely inferior to his Creator. When Isaiah described Lucifer’s fall, he didn’t portray him as God’s counterpart but as a created being whose pride led to rebellion: “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!” (Isaiah 14:12).
The biblical narrative isn’t about equal forces battling for supremacy but about a sovereign Creator allowing temporary rebellion before establishing His unchallenged reign. Even Satan’s most significant victory—inciting the crucifixion—became his most decisive defeat, as God used that very act to accomplish salvation.
This distinction matters tremendously. If we unconsciously adopt Hollywood’s dualistic worldview, we may begin to question whether God is truly in control, whether evil might ultimately triumph, or whether some parts of creation lie outside God’s authority. The truth frees us from such fear. Evil is not a substance or power in itself but a privation—the absence of good, as darkness is simply the absence of light. God reigns unopposed, and His victory is certain.
Today’s Prayer: Sovereign Lord, remind me that You have no equal and no opposite. Amen.
Reflection Question: How has Hollywood’s portrayal of spiritual conflict influenced your view of God’s sovereignty?
