Don’t Hit The Guardrail
Proverbs 14:15 – “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.”
The mountain highway curved sharply ahead, with a steep drop-off visible beyond the shoulder. Metal guardrails lined the dangerous sections, their sturdy posts anchored deep into the ground. These barriers weren’t placed randomly—engineers had studied the terrain, identified the most hazardous spots, and positioned protection where drivers were most likely to lose control.
Guardrails serve a vital purpose: they can save lives when vehicles veer off course. But they’re designed as a last resort, not a driving strategy. Hitting a guardrail might prevent a car from plunging over a cliff, but it still means damaged vehicles, potential injuries, and costly repairs. The goal is always to stay safely between the lines.
God has placed similar guardrails throughout our lives—biblical principles, wise counsel, and moral boundaries designed to protect us when we’re tempted to veer into dangerous territory. These might include guidelines about relationships, finances, speech, or character that seem restrictive until we understand their protective purpose.
Some people treat God’s boundaries like guardrails they can safely hit. They push right up to the edge of what’s permissible, reasoning that as long as they don’t cross certain lines, they’re fine. But this misses the point entirely. Even when guardrails prevent catastrophe, collision with them still causes damage.
The wise approach is to drive carefully in the center of the road, respecting both the destination ahead and the dangers alongside. God’s boundaries aren’t challenges to see how close we can get without crossing them—they’re loving protection meant to keep us on the path that leads to life.
Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for the guardrails You’ve placed in my life. Give me wisdom to recognize and respect the boundaries You’ve established for my protection. Amen.
Reflection Question: In what area of your life are you currently “driving close to the guardrail”?
