Faith In Spite Of Fear

Philippians 4:13 – “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

There’s a scene near the end of an adventure film where the hero reaches a point that appears to be a dead stop. An ancient map describes a leap of faith, but standing at the edge, all that’s visible below is a sheer drop into a deep canyon. There’s no bridge, no visible path forward, nothing but instinct and a written instruction telling him to step out anyway. His face in that moment isn’t calm. It isn’t confident. It’s afraid — genuinely, visibly afraid, the kind of fear that would justify turning back to almost anyone watching. And yet, after a long pause, he extends one foot forward into what looks like open air.

What makes that moment compelling isn’t the absence of fear. It’s that the fear was clearly present and he moved anyway.

That distinction matters because faith often gets mischaracterized as the feeling of certainty — the assumption that real trust in God arrives without hesitation or doubt, and that fear means faith has failed. But Scripture doesn’t describe faith that way. Moses was afraid standing before Pharaoh. Gideon was afraid facing the Midianites. Even Jesus, in Gethsemane, asked that the cup be removed if possible. Fear showing up in the moment of obedience isn’t evidence that faith is absent. It’s often the precise context in which faith gets exercised at all.

Philippians 4:13 isn’t a promise that the fear disappears before the strength arrives. It’s a promise that strength is available in the middle of the step, for the person who takes it anyway.

The ground doesn’t have to feel solid for the step to be obedient.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, give me the courage to step forward even when fear is present and certainty is not. Remind me that faith was never the absence of fear, but trust in You in spite of it. Amen.

Reflection Question:
What is God calling you to step into right now where fear is present?
