God’s Children Also Didn’t Listen

Genesis 2:16-17 – “The Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.“

The conversation unfolds with predictable heartache: a parent sitting across the table, eyes downcast, quietly confessing perceived failure as they describe adult children making harmful choices. “Where did I go wrong?” they ask, shoulders heavy with assumed responsibility. This burden of parental guilt is as old as humanity itself.

Consider for a moment an often-overlooked perspective on the original family dynamic. Adam, created directly by God in perfect conditions, with clear instructions and unhindered communion with his Creator, still chose disobedience. If God’s “parenting”—perfect in wisdom, love, and execution—resulted in rebellious offspring, what does this reveal about the limits of parental influence?

Scripture consistently honors the vital role parents play while simultaneously affirming individual responsibility. Ezekiel 18:20 establishes this boundary clearly: “The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child.” This divine principle acknowledges the reality that each person stands accountable for their own choices.

This truth offers both comfort and challenge. It relieves parents from the crushing weight of deterministic responsibility for every choice their adult children make. Yet it also humbles us by recognizing the ultimate limits of our influence, regardless of our parenting approach.

God, the perfect Father, continues to love His wayward children, offering grace and maintaining relationship even amid disobedience. His example teaches us to hold two truths simultaneously: we should parent with devoted intentionality while recognizing that our children’s lives ultimately belong to them and to God.

Parents who carry unwarranted guilt might find freedom in recognizing that even God’s child didn’t always listen.

Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, comfort parents who carry the weight of guilt over their children’s choices. Help them release what is not theirs to carry. Amen.

Reflection Question: In what ways have you held yourself responsible for outcomes that were ultimately beyond your control?
