God’s Gift To Us

Isaiah 9:6 – “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The package sits wrapped beneath the tree, carefully chosen, thoughtfully prepared. Inside lies something the giver selected with the recipient specifically in mind—not just any gift, but the perfect gift. Anticipation grows as the moment of unwrapping approaches, a moment when thoughtfulness becomes tangible and love becomes visible.

Christmas morning reminds us that at the heart of our gift-giving tradition lies the original Gift—one that didn’t arrive in colorful paper or festive bags but wrapped in swaddling cloths. As the prophet Isaiah proclaimed centuries before that first Christmas, “To us a child is born, to us a son is given.” This divine gift arrived not in response to our worthiness but precisely because of our need.

Unlike our sometimes misguided gift selections, the Father’s gift perfectly addressed humanity’s deepest requirement. We needed more than inspiration; we needed incarnation. We needed more than guidelines; we needed grace. We needed more than philosophy; we needed presence. In Jesus, God gave exactly what we most desperately needed but could never provide for ourselves.

The wonder of Christmas isn’t simply that God gave, but how and what He gave. The Creator entered creation. Divinity clothed itself in humanity. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. This gift wasn’t delivered from a safe distance but through divine proximity—God with us, not merely God for us.

The manger scene captures this staggering reality: the hands that shaped stars now formed as tiny fingers; the voice that thundered creation now uttering infant cries; the King of kings becoming vulnerable to those He came to save. This unprecedented gift surpasses our ability to fully comprehend yet invites our personal response.

Every earthly gift exchanged today echoes this original Gift—God’s perfect provision for our greatest need, wrapped not in shining paper but in humble humanity and sacrificial love.

Today’s Prayer: Father, as we exchange presents today, help us remember that the greatest gift wasn’t wrapped in paper but in flesh. Amen.

Reflection Question: How does recognizing Jesus as God’s perfect gift change your perspective on both receiving and giving gifts today?
