Going To The Movies

Mark 6:31 – “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

The theater lights dim, the previews end, and for the next two hours the outside world simply stops existing. No emails buzzing in a pocket, no deadline pressing against the back of the mind, no argument from that morning replaying on a loop. Just a dark room, a bright screen, and permission to think about nothing except whatever story is unfolding in front of you. People walk in carrying whatever weight they brought with them that day, and for two hours, most of them set it down without even realizing they’ve done it.

That is a large part of why the movies work the way they do. It is not really about the plot or the actors. It is about the rare permission to stop performing every role a person carries, employee, parent, spouse, and just sit still long enough to breathe. The burden does not disappear. It is still waiting in the parking lot afterward. But something happens in that dark room that would not happen if a person kept pushing through without ever stopping.

Jesus understood that His disciples needed the same thing. Mark records a moment when the crowds pressing in on them were so constant that the disciples did not even have time to eat, and Jesus told them to come away by themselves to a quiet place and rest. He did not scold them for needing it. He built the rest into the rhythm Himself, stepping away from the very ministry He came to do, because He knew what continuous output does to people who were never designed to run without stopping.

Rest was not something they earned after enough had been accomplished. It was something He built into the week itself, a reminder that stopping is not the opposite of faithfulness. Sometimes it is the shape faithfulness takes.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, teach me to receive rest as a gift You designed, not a luxury I have to earn. Help me set my burdens down long enough to be restored. Amen.

Reflection Question: When was the last time you truly rested rather than just distracted yourself?
