He Chose To Die
John 15:13 – “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
The firefighter plunges back into the burning building. His colleagues shout warnings—the structure’s collapsing, the heat’s unbearable, he’s already exhausted. But he heard a child’s cry from the upper floor. So he goes back in, choosing the risk of death over living with the knowledge he didn’t try. Love reveals itself not in what we say but in what we’re willing to sacrifice.
By this measure, God’s love for humanity defies comprehension. The Creator of galaxies, the eternal King enthroned in unapproachable light, made an unthinkable choice: He preferred to die for us rather than live without us.
This wasn’t a decision made under duress. God wasn’t forced into sacrifice as His only option. As sovereign Lord, He could have chosen countless other paths—creating a new humanity, enforcing justice without mercy, or allowing creation to suffer the natural consequences of rebellion. Yet faced with eternal separation from those He loved, God chose the cross.
Revelation describes Jesus as “the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). Before time began, before humanity’s fall, the Godhead had already determined that if relationship with us required divine sacrifice, that price would be paid.
This love transcends our human categories. Paul marveled that “rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8).
The cross stands as history’s most decisive declaration: the God who needs nothing considered relationship with you more valuable than His own life. He didn’t merely risk death—He embraced it, preferring to die for you than to live throughout eternity without you.
Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, help this truth move from theological concept to heart-changing reality in my life. Amen.
Reflection Question: How would your life change if you lived fully convinced that God preferred dying for you over living without you?
