He Won’t Let Go
Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The crosswalk light changes and the mother steps into the street, her three-year-old beside her. The child’s tiny fingers wrap around one of her fingers, proud of holding on tight. But watch the mother’s hand—her entire palm engulfs that small fist, her grip firm and sure. A car approaches too fast, and the child’s attention drifts toward a shiny object on the ground. The child’s fingers loosen, but the mother’s grip tightens instantly. She’s not trusting a toddler’s attention span with her child’s safety.
Any parent knows this instinctively. The child may think they’re maintaining the connection, but it’s the parent’s hold that truly keeps them secure.
This image beautifully illustrates our relationship with God. We often speak of “holding onto God” during difficult times, clinging to Him through faith and prayers. There’s truth in this, but it’s only half the story. The greater reality is that He is holding onto us.
David understood this when he wrote, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley… you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). Moses reminded Israel that God carried them “as a father carries his son” (Deuteronomy 1:31). Isaiah declared that God has “engraved you on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:16).
Our grip may weaken during trials. Our fingers may slip in moments of doubt. But God’s grip never loosens. His commitment never wavers.
Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for holding me securely when my own grip weakens. Amen.
Reflection Question: How does knowing God’s grip on you is stronger than your grip on Him change how you face current challenges?
