Highwater Pants

1 Samuel 16:7 – “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

It happened in the breakroom—a glance at a coworker’s pants that didn’t quite reach their shoes. “Highwaters,” as they’re often called. And in that moment, a judgment formed almost automatically. How quickly we notice, categorize, and sometimes dismiss someone based on something as insignificant as the length of their pants.

Our world operates on these superficial assessments. We scan clothing brands, hairstyles, car models, and job titles, using these external markers to sort people into categories of value. This happens so instinctively that we hardly notice it—a silent, internal ranking system operating beneath our conscious awareness.

Yet Scripture reveals that God functions on an entirely different wavelength. When Samuel was sent to anoint Israel’s next king, he was immediately drawn to Jesse’s eldest son, whose impressive stature seemed to fit the royal mold. God’s correction was gentle but firm: “Do not consider his appearance or his height… The Lord does not look at the things people look at.”

What a revolutionary statement! God’s vision penetrates past the surface—beyond education, eloquence, fashion sense, or social status—straight to the core of who we are. While we’re distracted by the hemline, God is examining the heart.

This divine perspective isn’t just interesting; it’s a model we’re called to imitate. Paul reminds us, “So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view” (2 Corinthians 5:16). Following Christ means adopting a new way of seeing—looking past highwater pants to the image-bearer wearing them.

Learning to see as God sees requires intentional practice. The most valuable things about a person are always invisible to the casual glance.

Today’s Prayer:

Father, forgive me for the times I’ve judged others based on superficial appearances. Help me to value others as You do. Amen.

Reflection Question:

When was the last time you caught yourself making a judgment based solely on appearance?
