Hospital Socks

Psalm 37:31 – “The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.”

The nurse helped the woman sit up on the edge of the hospital bed and handed her a pair of thick yellow socks. Rows of rubber dots covered the soles. Two days after surgery, she was ready for her first short walk down the hallway, and the freshly waxed floor gleamed under the lights. She pulled the socks on slowly, stood with the nurse’s arm under hers, and took one careful step after another. The rubber grips held firm on every tile. The hospital had thought ahead, because a fall in the very place meant for healing could undo everything.

Believers walk on slippery ground every day. Temptation, discouragement, and confusion can catch a person off balance in a single moment, especially during seasons when the soul is still healing. The psalmist described a different kind of grip. When the law of God lives in a person’s heart, he wrote, that person’s feet do not slip.

Asaph learned this the hard way. In Psalm 73, he admitted that his feet had almost slipped as he watched the wicked prosper and began to wonder whether faithfulness was worth it. His footing returned only when he entered the sanctuary of God and saw things from God’s perspective. Truth steadied him where his feelings could not.

God’s Word works like grip on the soul. Scripture stored in the heart holds a believer steady when emotions run high and the ground feels uncertain. The Lord has thought ahead for His people. Those who keep His Word close will find their footing secure, even on the slickest stretch of the road to healing.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, plant Your Word deep in my heart so my feet do not slip. Amen.

Reflection Question: What slippery place in your life needs the steady grip of God’s Word?
