I Trust In Him
Psalm 118:8-9 – “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.”
The campaign signs dotted lawns across neighborhoods. Social media erupted with heated debates. Family gatherings became battlegrounds of political division. Election season has a way of revealing where our deepest trust truly lies.
I watched a friend spend countless hours consuming political commentary, his anxiety rising with each new poll. “If only our candidate wins,” he insisted, “then we’ll finally see positive change.” His hope—his very peace—had become tethered to a political outcome.
Yet Scripture consistently redirects our ultimate confidence away from human solutions. The psalmist didn’t mince words: “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” (Psalm 146:3). This isn’t suggesting civic disengagement, but rather a soul-level recalibration of our deepest dependencies.
Elections matter. Policies impact lives. Yet when our emotional wellbeing rises and falls with political fortunes, we’ve misplaced our primary trust. No elected official—however aligned with our values—can provide what only God can: true security, lasting peace, and eternal hope.
The prophet Isaiah reminded God’s people during political turbulence: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). Perfect peace doesn’t come through political victory but through steadfast trust in an unchanging God.
Whatever the election outcomes, our fundamental reality remains: God still reigns. His purposes advance. His kingdom cannot be shaken. When the political signs come down, this enduring truth stands firm.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me engage as a responsible citizen while keeping my ultimate confidence in You alone. Regardless of election results, grant me the peace. Amen.
Reflection Question: In what ways has your emotional wellbeing become tied to political outcomes?
