Information Overload

Luke 10:41-42 – “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.“

The notifications won’t stop buzzing. Emails flood the inbox faster than they can be addressed. New software requires immediate mastery. Strategic plans demand attention. Meanwhile, deadlines loom, meetings multiply, and the mental bandwidth narrows with each passing hour. Welcome to the modern workplace—where “information overload” isn’t just a phrase but a daily experience.

This deluge of data and demands extends beyond our professional lives. News alerts, social media, family responsibilities, and community obligations all compete for our limited mental capacity. The sheer volume can leave us mentally exhausted yet spiritually malnourished.

Jesus encountered a similar situation in Martha’s home. While not facing digital disruption, Martha was nevertheless overwhelmed by the tasks demanding her attention. Her sister Mary, meanwhile, had found the space to sit at Jesus’ feet. Martha’s frustration is understandable—the work was real and necessary. Yet Jesus gently redirected her perspective: “Few things are needed—or indeed only one.”

This response wasn’t dismissing Martha’s legitimate responsibilities but reordering their priority. The pressing rarely equals the important. The urgent often drowns out the essential.

King David, leading a nation with countless demands on his attention, still recognized this truth when he wrote, “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek” (Psalm 27:4). Paul echoed this singular focus: “One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” (Philippians 3:13).

The antidote to information overload isn’t necessarily less activity but greater intentionality. It means creating boundaries that protect space for the “one thing” that truly matters—our relationship with God. In a world of endless inputs, the clarity to distinguish between the essential and the merely urgent becomes a spiritual discipline itself.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, in our information-saturated world, help us choose what truly matters. Give us wisdom to set boundaries that protect our time with You. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific “information overload” in your life is currently crowding out your relationship with God?
