Instructions Before Takeoff
Matthew 7:26 – “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”
The flight attendant moved through the same demonstration she had given hundreds of times before, pointing out the exits, explaining the oxygen masks, demonstrating how to buckle a seatbelt as though anyone on the plane had never worn one. Most passengers did not look up. Phones stayed out, conversations continued, a few people had already closed their eyes for a nap before the plane even left the gate. The information was being given freely, clearly, right there for anyone willing to pay attention, and the overwhelming majority of the cabin simply assumed they would never need it.
That assumption is usually correct. Most flights land without incident, and the instructions given before takeoff go completely unused for the entire trip. But that is exactly what makes the instructions easy to ignore, not because they are unimportant, but because most days give no evidence that they were needed at all. A person does not find out whether they were paying attention until the moment everything depends on it, and by then there is no time left to go back and listen more carefully.
Jesus told this parable to the crowd gathered on the mountainside, right after finishing the very words He was now asking them to respond to. Two builders, one on rock and one on sand, and the difference between them had nothing to do with how their houses looked while the weather stayed calm. Both looked equally solid on a clear day. The difference only became visible when the storm actually arrived, when wind and rain tested a foundation that had been chosen long before the weather turned. Jesus was not just telling a story. He was telling that same crowd, the ones who had just spent an afternoon listening to Him teach, that hearing His words and doing nothing with them was its own kind of foundation, one that would hold up fine until the moment it actually mattered.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me take seriously the instructions You give me now, before the storm arrives, rather than assuming I will never need them. Amen.
Reflection Question: What has God clearly instructed you to do that you have been tempted to ignore simply because things still feel calm?
