It Takes Serious Effort

Hebrews 12:1 – “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.“

The bathroom renovation seemed straightforward at first. Yet there it was—layer upon layer of wallpaper, each sheet stubbornly clinging to the wall despite steam, scoring tools, and specially formulated removers. What should have been a weekend project stretched into days of persistent effort. Each section revealed another challenge beneath, requiring patience and determination to reach the clean surface needed for transformation.

This home improvement struggle mirrors a deeper spiritual reality. The “walls” of our lives accumulate layers over time—harmful thought patterns, unhealthy relationships, destructive habits, false beliefs about God or ourselves. Like stubborn wallpaper, these elements don’t typically detach easily, regardless of our initial enthusiasm for change.

Scripture acknowledges this reality. The writer of Hebrews doesn’t suggest that hindrances fall away automatically but instructs us to actively “throw off” what entangles us. Paul similarly uses active language in Ephesians 4:22-24, telling believers to “put off your old self” and “put on the new self.” These commands recognize that spiritual transformation requires intentional effort and persistent action.

The restoration process often reveals unexpected complexities. What appeared to be a single layer of wallpaper might hide five more beneath. Similarly, addressing a visible behavior may uncover deeper issues requiring attention—childhood wounds, unexamined beliefs, or identity questions. Complete restoration often goes beyond surface treatments to address underlying conditions.

Yet the effort brings genuine renewal. Just as properly prepared walls provide the necessary foundation for beautiful new expressions, the patient work of removing spiritual hindrances creates space for authentic transformation. The process isn’t just about elimination but preparation for something better to take its place.

True change rarely comes quickly or easily—but with persistence, even the most stubborn patterns eventually yield to renewal.

Today’s Prayer: Father, give me patience and persistence to remove the layers of sin and unhealthy patterns in my life. Show me what needs to go and strengthen me for the work of spiritual renovation. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific “wallpaper” in your life has been particularly resistant to removal?
