Leaves Off The Tree

1 Peter 1:24-25 – “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

The morning walkway was carpeted with fallen leaves—once vibrant parts of the living tree, now scattered and trampled underfoot. Most people hurried past without a glance, focused on reaching their destination. These discarded leaves, no longer serving their purpose on the branch, had become invisible to passersby despite their previous beauty.

There’s something sobering about fallen leaves. Months earlier, these same leaves emerged as fresh green growth, filtering sunlight and providing shade. They were integral to the tree’s life, converting light to nourishment. But season’s change brought inevitable separation—what was once vitally connected became detached and disposable.

Jesus used similar natural imagery when discussing spiritual realities: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned” (John 15:5-6).

This isn’t merely about final judgment but about present purpose. Disconnected from Christ, we lose the very source of our spiritual vitality. Like fallen leaves, we may maintain temporary color, but the process of spiritual withering has begun. No longer drawing life from the source, we become increasingly irrelevant to our intended purpose.

The leaves remind us to examine our connection. Are we drawing daily nourishment from Christ, or have we begun the subtle process of separation? Are we fulfilling our purpose while connected to the living tree, or drifting aimlessly, separated from our source?

Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep me vitally connected to You, the source of my spiritual life. When I’m tempted to drift, remind me that I can do nothing without you. Amen.

Reflection Question: In what ways are you be experiencing spiritual “withering” from disconnection from Christ?
