Moving Clouds

John 3:8 – “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

The man stretched out on a blanket in the backyard with his hands folded behind his head and watched the sky. A large white cloud shaped like a ship drifted slowly from left to right above the treetops. Behind it, smaller clouds followed in a loose line, their edges thinning and stretching as they went. Down in the yard, the air felt almost still, and the leaves barely stirred. Yet high overhead, something was clearly pushing those clouds across the sky at a steady pace. The force moving them stayed invisible, while every cloud answered to it.

Jesus used the same picture when He explained new birth to Nicodemus. The wind blows wherever it pleases, He said, and no one can tell where it comes from or where it is going. Its sound can be heard, and its effects can be seen, while the wind itself remains invisible. Every person born of the Spirit, Jesus explained, shows the same pattern.

No one can watch the Holy Spirit enter a heart. The evidence of His work shows up afterward in a changed life. Paul described that evidence as fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. A bitter person begins to forgive, a restless heart finds rest, and an old habit finally loses the grip it held for years. Willpower alone cannot explain changes like these.

The Spirit of God still moves across ordinary lives today. A believer may never see Him directly, yet the movement He produces is unmistakable, and every changed heart gives clear evidence that He is at work.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, let Your Spirit move in my life so others can see the evidence of Your work in me. Amen.

Reflection Question: What change in your life can only be explained by the work of God’s Spirit?
