Muddy Waters or Healing Stream
2 Kings 5:11-12 – “Naaman was angry and went away, saying, ‘Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?’ So he turned and went away in a rage.”
The Syrian general stood at the Jordan’s edge, disappointment etched across his face. Naaman had expected a dramatic encounter—perhaps the prophet waving his hands over the leprosy, calling loudly upon his God, performing rituals befitting a man of his stature. Instead, he received simple instructions to wash seven times in a muddy river that couldn’t compare to the clean, beautiful rivers of his homeland.
His reaction reveals a universal human tendency—we often have preconceived notions about how God should work. We want healing that fits our expectations, deliverance that follows our preferred methods, answers that come in packages we’ve designed. When God’s directions seem too simple or contrary to our preferences, we risk rejecting the very solution we seek.
Naaman initially failed to understand that healing power didn’t reside in the water itself. The Jordan held no magical properties. The power lay in the obedience. God was testing the quality of Naaman’s faith—his willingness to humble himself and follow divine instruction.
Fortunately, wise servants intervened: “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” Their reasoning pierced his pride, and his obedience brought complete restoration.
This pattern repeats throughout Scripture. Trumpets bringing down walls at Jericho. Mud applied to blind eyes with the command “Go, wash.” Peter casting his net on the other side after catching nothing. Lepers showing themselves to priests while still diseased but cleansed “as they went.” The methods confounded human expectations, but obedience to God’s word brought the breakthrough. Sometimes the muddy Jordan is exactly where healing waits.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me recognize that healing comes through obedience to Your word. Amen.
Reflection Question: What simple act of obedience might be exactly the path to your breakthrough?
