Deuteronomy 30:19 – “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life.”
The mall stretched out in every direction the moment the doors opened, storefront after storefront competing for the same walk down the same corridor. One store offered quality worth every dollar spent. Another looked nearly identical from the outside but sold something that would fall apart within a month, marked down just enough to tempt a shopper looking for a bargain. Nobody forces a customer through any particular door. The options simply sit there side by side, and everything a shopper walks out with depends entirely on which storefront they chose to enter.
Some leave that mall with something that will serve them well for years. Others leave with regret already setting in before they reach the parking lot, quietly aware they chose poorly, even if they are not ready to admit it out loud yet. The mall itself never decided the outcome. The choice made inside it did.
Moses stood before the Israelites with that same kind of clarity, though the stakes had nothing to do with a shopping trip. He told them plainly that life and death, blessings and curses, had been set before them, and then he told them just as plainly to choose life. That command only makes sense if the choosing itself carries real weight, if God does not simply hand out blessing and curse at random while people stand by as spectators to their own future.
Every shopper who walked through those doors had the same mall to choose from, the same aisles open to anyone willing to walk them. God has laid out life the same way, doors standing open in both directions, and He is still calling out over the noise of every competing storefront, urging His people toward the one door that actually leads home.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me choose wisely today, aware that every choice I make leads somewhere. Give me discernment to choose life in the decisions before me. Amen.
Reflection Question: What choice are you facing right now where you need to intentionally choose the path that leads to life rather than the one that simply looks appealing?
