Put Them Out

Mark 5:38-40 – When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.’ But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.

The scene at Jairus’s house was typical of first-century mourning—professional wailers creating the expected atmosphere of grief, friends and neighbors gathering to offer condolences. When Jesus arrived and declared, “The child is not dead but asleep,” their response was immediate and revealing—they laughed at Him. Their mockery exposed hearts closed to divine possibility, minds already settled on what was and wasn’t possible.

Jesus’ next action provides a pattern worth noting. He didn’t argue with the skeptics or try to convince the mockers. He didn’t grow defensive or attempt to justify His statement. He simply “put them all out” before proceeding with the miracle. Those who couldn’t believe were excluded from witnessing what faith would accomplish.

Jesus was establishing an environment where faith could operate without the continuous drag of unbelief. He recognized that some people, regardless of evidence or explanation, will refuse to believe what God has spoken. Rather than allowing their skepticism to create a faith-hostile atmosphere, He simply removed them from the equation.

When God speaks direction for your life—whether career changes, ministry initiatives, relationship decisions, or personal growth—some voices will inevitably respond with skepticism or mockery. Following Jesus’ example doesn’t mean responding with anger or argument. It simply means creating appropriate distance from influences that would continually undermine your faith.

Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me discernment to recognize voices of unbelief and courage to create space where faith can flourish. Amen.

Reflection Question: What skeptical voices do you need to “put out” to move forward with what God has spoken?
