Seniors In The Pool

1 Timothy 4:8 – “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

They’re in the pool every morning without fail — a group of senior citizens working through their routines with a consistency that puts younger gym members to shame. Water walking, resistance exercises, stretching against the pool wall. From the outside it might not look particularly demanding, but that’s not the point and they know it. The point is that bodies which stop moving begin to deteriorate in ways that are difficult to reverse. Joints stiffen. Muscles weaken. Mobility that was taken for granted gradually disappears. These men and women have lived long enough to understand something important — you don’t maintain what you refuse to exercise.

So they show up. Every morning. Without waiting to feel like it.

There’s a spiritual parallel that’s difficult to miss. The same principle that governs physical conditioning governs the interior life. Faith that isn’t exercised doesn’t stay at its current level — it weakens. The prayer life that goes untended grows cold. The capacity to hear God’s voice diminishes when time in Scripture becomes inconsistent. Spiritual muscles respond to the same basic law as physical ones — use them or lose them.

What makes the seniors in the pool instructive isn’t just their consistency. It’s their self-awareness. They know what happens when they stop, and that knowledge is enough motivation to keep going even on the mornings when the effort feels inconvenient.

That kind of honest self-awareness about our spiritual condition is exactly what Paul was pressing Timothy toward. Godliness requires training. And training requires showing up before you feel like you need to.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, give me the discipline to exercise my faith consistently and help me to understand that the conditioning happens in the showing up, not in the feeling ready. Amen.

Reflection Question:
Which spiritual discipline have you allowed to go unexercised for an extended period of time?
