Sirens
Hebrews 3:15 – “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Anyone who has lived in a city long enough learns to read a siren without thinking about it. The pitch rises, and instinct kicks in before conscious thought does. Eyes check the mirror, hands ease off the gas, the car drifts toward the shoulder to clear a path. Nobody debates whether the siren is worth taking seriously. Somewhere close by, something has gone wrong enough that emergency crews are racing toward it, and every driver on the road is trained to respond immediately, without needing to see the accident or the fire to know the warning is real.
That instinct exists because ignoring a siren has consequences. A driver who tunes it out, assuming it does not apply to them, risks colliding with the very vehicle rushing to save someone’s life. The siren is not a suggestion. It is an alarm built to interrupt whatever else a person was focused on.
God sends His own kind of siren into a life from time to time. A conviction that will not settle down no matter how it gets rationalized away. A warning from a friend who loves someone enough to say the hard thing. A consequence that shows up small before it shows up large, meant to be heard as an alarm rather than dismissed as bad luck. The writer of Hebrews warned believers not to harden their hearts when they hear His voice, because a hardened heart is exactly what turns a clear siren into background noise.
Nobody in traffic ever asks whether an ambulance is overreacting. The wise response to a siren has never been to keep driving as if nothing was heard.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me recognize the sirens You send into my life and respond quickly, without hardening my heart or explaining them away. Amen.
Reflection Question: Has God been sending a “siren” into your life recently that you’ve been tempted to ignore or explain away?
