Speed Bumps In The Road

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The residential street stretched ahead invitingly, and instinct said to accelerate. But every hundred yards, a strategically placed speed bump appeared, demanding an abrupt slowdown. These weren’t accidental features—the neighborhood had installed them deliberately. Too many drivers had been racing through, creating danger for children and families. The speed bumps forced everyone to reduce their pace, whether they wanted to or not.

Life has a way of presenting similar obstacles. Just when we’re cruising along at full speed, pursuing our goals with single-minded intensity, something appears that forces us to slow down. An unexpected illness. A job loss. A relationship conflict. A financial setback. These disruptions feel like inconveniences, interruptions to our carefully planned momentum.

But what if these aren’t random obstacles? What if God sometimes places speed bumps in our path for our own protection and the well-being of others around us?

In our fast-paced culture, we often equate speed with success and busyness with importance. We rush from one commitment to the next, rarely pausing to evaluate direction or purpose. Sometimes God uses circumstances to force what we wouldn’t choose voluntarily—stillness.

The psalmist understood this need: “Be still, and know that I am God.” In Hebrew, “be still” literally means “cease striving” or “let go.” It’s a call to stop our frantic activity long enough to remember who’s really in control.

Speed bumps in the road aren’t punishment—they’re protection. They remind us that life isn’t a race to be won, but a journey to be experienced with wisdom and awareness.

Today’s Prayer: Father, when You place speed bumps in my path, help me see them as Your protection rather than frustrating obstacles. Teach me to slow down, listen for Your voice, and trust Your timing over my urgency. Amen.

Reflection Question: What current “speed bump” in your life is God using to slow you down?
